Severe weather warnings covered much of Siouxland between 4 and 7 p.m. as bands of storms moved northeast through the tri-state area. Storm spotters in several locations reported golf-ball-sized hail and wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph. The National Weather Service in Des Moines also counted more than 750 lightning strikes in western Iowa between 6 and 6:15 p.m., with more than 2,000 registering the hour before. Around 4:30 p.m., the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office went to the scene after power poles belonging to MidAmerican Energy and the county Rural Electric Cooperative reportedly buckled under wind gusts, toppling onto Old Highway 141 near County Highway K-64 and blocking portions of the roadway. Ruth Comer, a spokeswoman with MidAmerican, said three of the poles belonged to MidAmerican Energy, and the downed poles left 276 customers in rural Woodbury County and the town of Hornick without power. The Rural Electric Cooperative could not be reached to confirm whether an outage had occurred. Crews continued to work Sunday evening through the rain to divert traffic and restore power. Comer said MidAmerican expected customers to have power by 2 or 3 a.m. At WinnaVegas Casino in Sloan, Iowa, a five-minute burst of quarter-sized hail captured the attention of numerous casino-goers, Winnavegas Director of Marketing Travis Morgan said. "It sounded like it was continuous thunder going on overhead," he said. "People were outside under our overhang, gawking at it and taking pics, taking video. Nobody was scared, but everyone was curious." Morgan said the hail caused slight damage to vehicles in the parking lot. Bands of precipitation continued to move through Siouxland through the evening hours. Precipitation totals ranged from one-tenth of an inch to more than an inch. Siouxlanders will enjoy a brief reprieve from wet weather Monday. According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, Monday will be mostly sunny with a high of 67. However, more storms will roll in late Tuesday, with high chances of rain continuing through the rest of the week. | | | | |
