Thirteen people were injured, none seriously, on Saturday morning when a porch deck collapsed at the rear of a cabin that was being rented for the weekend by a group of fishermen from Columbia County, according to Haneyville Fire Chief William McCoy. "We were called to a building collapse with multiple injuries on South Springbrook Road about 10:30 a.m.," McCoy said, adding that at least eight ambulances were called to the scene in Gallagher Township. A dozen people were standing on or near the porch when a 12-by-20-foot section gave way, sending many of them 10 to 12 feet to the ground, McCoy said. "They had come out onto the porch to make their breakfast when the deck let loose," he added. "It was just unreal, someone could have been underneath this deck," John Latin, one of the fishermen, said as he took pictures of the damage more than an hour later. When the deck gave out, he was standing in a corner of the deck that was still standing. "They were just coming out to eat," Latin said of the other fishermen. "We had food sitting out. As people started to come out, the deck suddenly lunged and ripped away from the building," Latin said. "Everyone fell down, slid down. The rest of us started to care for the wounded, making sure they were OK. We wanted to make sure a couple of them didn't go into shock," he said. "It looked like slow motion, but it was really quick," Latin said in describing the collapse. Referring to the extent of injuries, Latin said "there was a couple with broken bones, some with lacerations and maybe a concussion and a shoulder injury." McCoy, one of the first firefighters to reach the remote scene, about 10 miles west of Waterville, said the fishermen already had all the injured victims moved to the front of the cabin. "We started to triage them, evaluating the nature of their injuries, and called for additional manpower," McCoy said. One person suffered a broken leg, while another suffered back injuries and a third head injuries, McCoy said, referring to those most seriously injured. Five people were taken to the Williamsport Regional Medical Center and another eight were "walking wounded" and declined treatment, he said. Latin said he had since talked with a two of his injured buddies. "They're all in high spirits and doing well," he said. Information about who owned the property and what might have caused the collapse was not available Saturday night. |
